While meeting with my on-site advisor, he recommended the book Value Investing Today by Charles H. Brandes.
Founder and managing partner of Brandes Investment Partners, LLC, Charles H. Brandes is one of the most notable value investors working today.
In his book, Brandes explains his method of "value investing". As opposed to the flashy "get rich quick" tricks sought out by many investors in the market, Brandes teaches about investing over the long-run, advocating stability, substance, and true worth.
"Value investing isn't about excitement, or headline-making discoveries, or any of the other things that light up journalist's eyes and stockbrokers' phones. Value investing is instead about finding companies with solid business fundamentals that, for whatever reason, have a current stock value price that is less than their intrinsic value. It is about looking under the hood, kicking the tires, and buying the stock in those companies for seventy cents on the dollar, or less."
So instead of chasing the next big stock in the news, value investing is looking for companies with a strong financial background, but whose stock prices are currently undervalued.
One of the best features of the book has to be how accessible all the information written in the book is. Brandes has written the book so that anyone who is interested can pick it up and be able to follow along. I'm about one-fourth of the way through the book, so when I finish, I'll be sure to write a review in a future Charles' Book Club!
